Chapter 15

Saint Thomas and the Council of Trent on the Oneness of the Christian Sacrifice

If it is a commonplace in the history of religious thought that no error ever achieves success except through the truth on which it feeds, at no time was this more evident than when the Reformers started preaching the uselessness of the Eucharistic Sacrifice. Indeed their success came from the most permanent of Christian truths, the all-sufficiency of the Sacrifice of the Cross. Hence it became imperative in the Catholic counter-reformation to examine more deeply the relationship between the Sacrifice of the Cross and the Eucharistic Sacrifice. The results of that great labor of investigation and restatement are embodied in the First and Second Chapters of the Twenty-Second Session of the Council of Trent. The remarkable feature, however, of that most scholarly and exact presentment of the Catholic doctrine of the Eucharistic sacrifice by the Fathers of Trent is this, that it gives an exact reproduction of the doctrine of Saint Thomas, whose line of thought and whose very expressions are easily recognized in its more classical treatment of the subject.
